Is a storage unit cheaper than Amazon FBA storage fees?

It can be, especially for stock that sits for a while, bulky items, or stock you sell through more than one channel. Amazon charges FBA storage by the space your stock takes up each month, with higher rates from October to December, while a unit with us is one four-weekly price for the space, however full you fill it. But FBA also picks, packs and ships your orders, so the fairest comparison is your whole cost, not storage alone.

How FBA storage fees work

Amazon’s UK seller pricing page lists monthly storage fees per cubic foot. In November 2026, standard-size products in most categories cost £0.76 per cubic foot per month from January to September, rising to £1.51 from October to December. Amazon also lists extra charges for stock held a long time, such as an aged inventory surcharge for items stored over 241 days. Amazon’s fees change, so check its current page.

How a unit is priced

With us you pay for the floor space every four weeks, and you can stack upwards, so a well-packed unit holds more than its floor area suggests. On our October 2026 price lists, the middle price every four weeks was £133 for a 50 sq ft unit and £228 for 100 sq ft. Prices vary by site and change often.

When each one wins

A unit often makes sense when:

  • you hold more stock than sells in a month, or carry seasonal stock all year;
  • your items are bulky, so cubic-foot fees add up quickly;
  • you sell on more than one platform, or at markets and events;
  • you’re happy to pack your own orders. You can pick and pack at your unit between 6am and 10pm, seven days a week.

FBA often makes sense when:

  • your stock turns over quickly;
  • you want Amazon to handle packing, delivery and returns;
  • you sell mainly on Amazon.

You can also use both: a business storage unit as the stockroom, sending smaller batches into FBA as they need them. That keeps aged stock out of Amazon’s warehouse.

Things to plan around

We can’t sign for deliveries on your behalf, so someone from your business needs to meet suppliers and couriers. A unit can’t be your returns or business address. Everything stored needs contents cover at what it would cost to replace your stock.
