Yes. Plenty of people do: the HomeOwners Alliance’s removals figures show Saturday is the second most popular day to move. If you’re buying, though, completion itself traditionally has to happen on a working weekday, so most buyers and sellers choose a Friday and use the weekend to settle in.
If you’re buying
Completion is the day the money passes between the solicitors and the keys are released. It falls on a working weekday so the bank transfers can go through and your solicitor is available. Once completion is confirmed, you can collect your keys and move in, so carrying your furniture in on the Saturday or Sunday works well.
If you’re selling and buying on the same day, your moving day is likely to be completion day itself, which means a weekday.
Two things to know about Fridays
- It’s the busiest day. Removals firms are much busier on Fridays, so it can cost more. One in five removal companies say they’ll offer mid-week deals.
- A delay can run into the weekend. If the money arrives late, completion may move to the next working day, and banks and solicitors aren’t open at the weekend to sort out problems. With a Friday completion, that can mean waiting until Monday.
So if your chain allows it, a mid-week completion is worth asking about. If Friday it is, it helps to have a plan in case the weekend goes differently.
If you’re renting
There’s no completion to wait for, so your move-in day and key handover are whatever you arrange with your landlord or letting agent: just ask whether a weekend suits them. Agree the inventory before you move in, take meter readings on the day, and when you leave, return every set of keys.
Where storage helps
Our standard access hours are 6am to 10pm, seven days a week, so you can load a unit on a Saturday or Sunday (check your site’s hours, as they can vary a little). That helps if completion slips to Monday and your things need somewhere to go, or if you’d like to clear boxes out before the big day so moving day is mostly furniture.
Smart entry is your key to the building, and you’ll get a text with everything you need to set it up before your move-in date. If you’re new to it, set it up before the weekend, or make your first visit on a weekday, when we’re easy to reach by phone.
