Why we ask you to call first
Space for a car isn’t like space for boxes. Whether and how we can help depends on the car and on the site, so we’d rather talk it through with you than have you guess from a size guide and book the wrong thing. Our vehicle storage page has more.
How much room a car takes
As a rough guide, a standard car park bay in the UK is 2.4 metres wide and 4.8 metres long, a size that hasn’t changed since the 1970s. The AA points out that cars have got bigger since then, so you might not have much room either side of a bay, and that the newer recommended size is 2.6 metres by 5 metres.
So when you think about space for a car, think beyond the car itself: you’ll want room to open a door and step out, and to walk round it. If you are storing a trailer rather than a car, our answer on trailer storage explains what to check with us first.
What to measure before you call
- The length, bumper to bumper.
- The width with the mirrors out, and again folded if they fold.
- The height, including any roof bars or roof box.
- Anything else you’d like to keep with it, such as a spare set of wheels or a car cover.
A tape measure is all you need, or you can use the figures the manufacturer gives for your model.

Making room in your own garage
