Can I store car tyres in a storage unit?

Give us a quick call on 0800 2545585 before you bring loose tyres or spare wheels, and we’ll tell you whether they can go into a unit at the site you’re using. Wherever your tyres end up, they’ll last longest kept clean, dry, cool and out of the sun, so here’s how to store them well.

Why we ask you to check first

Our units sit side by side in shared buildings, so we’re careful about anything that could give off a smell or fumes, or add to the fire risk, for the sake of everyone’s belongings. A short call means you won’t make a wasted trip with a boot full of tyres.

How to store tyres well

The tyre makers Continental and Cooper agree on the basics:

  • Clean them first. Continental suggests detergent, water and a tyre brush to lift road grime and brake dust, and drying them completely before storage.
  • Keep them cool, dry and out of the sun. Cooper advises a cool, dry place away from sunlight, heat and ozone, such as hot pipes and electric motors, and keeping them clear of grease, fuels and other substances that could deteriorate the rubber.
  • Let air move around them. Cooper also advises letting air circulate on all sides, including underneath, and storing them so water can’t collect inside.
  • Stand, stack or hang. Continental lists all three, and says standing them upright is the best option, as it puts less stress on the tyres. If you stack them flat, Cooper suggests rotating the stack regularly so the bottom tyres keep their shape. For more on keeping tyres in good condition at home, see our full guide to storing tyres safely.

Your car’s handbook or your tyre fitter can tell you anything specific to your tyres. If the whole car is going into storage, see how to prepare a car for storage.

Short of space in the garage?

Often the problem isn’t the tyres themselves but everything around them. Moving the boxes, garden furniture or decorating kit into a unit can free up a dry corner of the garage where your tyres can stand properly. Every unit has its own alarm, and our sites are watched by CCTV, monitored around the clock by a professional monitoring company.

Storing a motorbike instead?

A motorbike can be stored with us once the fuel and oil are drained and the battery is out. Our guide to storing a car, van or motorbike explains how.
