As a rough guide, a 25 sq ft unit holds the contents of a spare room: a single bed frame, a chest of drawers, 10 to 15 standard removal boxes and some seasonal things. Our size guide calls it a small unit: about a quarter of the floor space of a single garage, and it often holds more than people expect because you can stack upwards.
How big is 25 square feet?
Twenty-five square feet is the floor area, about 2.3 square metres. Picture half of a 50 sq ft unit, or a quarter of a single garage. Floor space is only half the story: boxes and taken-apart furniture go up, so plan the height of your stack as well as the floor.
What a 25 sq ft unit suits
- A spare room, or a student’s room cleared for the summer.
- Seasonal kit that won’t fit in the loft, such as garden furniture cushions, camping gear or the Christmas boxes.
- A handful of things while you’re between homes.
- Decluttering before a sale, when a few pieces and some boxes need to go somewhere safe.
If you’re only storing boxes, it’s a handy size too: as a rough guide, around 10 to 20 boxes plus a few standalone items.
When to go up a size
A 25 sq ft unit doesn’t comfortably take a sofa or white goods such as a fridge-freezer or washing machine. If either is on your list, or you’re clearing a whole one-bedroom flat, look at 50 sq ft instead. Our price lists also include a 35 sq ft size in between, so if you’ve a little more than a spare room’s worth you can step up without paying for space you won’t use.
Getting the most into it
- Take the bed frame apart and tape the screws to it.
- Use sturdy boxes of a similar size, heavy ones at the bottom, so they stack straight.
- Put the things you’ll want first near the door.
- Label each box on the side, so you can read it without moving the stack.
Our guide to packing boxes so they stack safely has more, and our room-by-room size guide compares the sizes side by side.
