Contents protection

Contents protection is cover that a self storage operator arranges for the goods its customers store, paid for as a charge alongside the storage fee. It is an alternative to relying on the customer’s own home or business insurance.

At Wigwam

Everything you store with us needs to be covered for the whole time it’s here, so that if the unexpected ever happens, you’re not left out of pocket. Your unit is alarmed and our sites are monitored around the clock by a CCTV monitoring company; cover is the last layer, there so you could replace what you’d lost.

Our contents protection is made for belongings in storage. It covers loss or damage from things such as fire, storm, burst pipes or water leaks, malicious damage, and theft involving forcible entry or exit. It starts the moment your things go into storage and runs until you take them out. Claims are settled new for old, with a £50 excess, and because it’s separate from your home insurance, a claim won’t affect your home no-claims record.

The charge is based on the replacement value you declare: what it would cost to replace everything as new today. It appears in your quote alongside your storage, and you can add it as you book. It’s a policy we take out with an insurer, so if you ever need to claim, you ask us and we deal with the insurer for you.

Using your own insurance instead

You’re welcome to, if your policy covers goods in self storage for their full value. If you’re still checking, we’d suggest starting with ours so your things are protected from day one. Send us proof of your own cover within 14 days of moving in and we’ll refund the contents protection charges in full. Either way, you declare a replacement value with us, so we know the total value of what’s stored.
