Storing a motorbike
A motorbike over the winter, while you’re working away, or while you sort out space at home is exactly the kind of thing a unit is good for. Getting it ready takes three steps:
- Drain the fuel. Petrol is flammable, and keeping anything flammable out of the units protects everyone’s belongings, yours included.
- Drain the oil, for the same reason.
- Take the battery out and keep it at home. Our units have no power sockets, so there’s nothing to charge it from anyway, and a battery kept at home is easy to look after and ready when you are. For an electric motorbike or scooter, that means taking the main battery out too.
Call us before you book and we’ll talk through the bike and help you choose a unit that suits it. A ground-floor unit is usually the simplest.
Riding kit and tools
Helmets, riding kit and panniers can go in the unit with the bike. Leave cans of fuel, oil, chain lube and other aerosols at home, because they’re on our list of items we can’t store.
A unit is for storage only, so it’s not somewhere to service or repair the bike. Our guide to working on a vehicle in a storage unit explains why, and what to do instead.
Insurance and value
Everything stored with us needs to be insured, through our contents protection or your own policy. When you declare the value of what you’re storing, a motorbike counts at its market value, allowing for its age, condition and use, rather than the price of a new one. It’s also worth telling your motor insurer where the bike is kept while it’s off the road.
