Can I store a mobility scooter in a storage unit?

Yes, you can store a mobility scooter or powered wheelchair with us. The one thing to plan for is the battery: we’d suggest taking the batteries and the charger home, which keeps them healthy and keeps things simple.

Looking after the batteries

Our units don’t have power sockets, so a scooter can’t be charged while it’s in storage. Sunrise Medical, a scooter maker, advises charging its scooters’ batteries at least once a month while they’re stored. So if your batteries come off the scooter, charge them fully, then keep them and the charger somewhere dry at home and top them up monthly. Your scooter’s own manual comes first wherever it says something different.

There’s also a safety rule we keep for everyone’s sake. Large lithium-ion batteries, those rated over 160Wh, can only stay in a unit if they’re built in and can’t be removed. If yours is removable and you’re not sure of its rating, check the label or manual: if it only shows volts and amp-hours, multiply them (a 24V 10Ah battery is 240Wh, so it comes home with you). Whatever stays in the unit should be clean, dry and free of faults, with a little space around it rather than anything stacked on top.

If the batteries are built into the scooter, ask your dealer how best to keep them charged over a long stay.

Getting the right unit

A scooter is heavy to move between floors, so ask for a ground-floor unit, or one near a lift, when you book, and we’ll check what’s free at your site. Send us the scooter’s length and width, including the basket, and we’ll help you pick a size. Our units aren’t heated, so clean and dry the scooter before it goes in.

You’ll need contents cover for the scooter, either our contents protection or your own insurance. There’s no deposit to pay.

If it belongs to a parent

If you’re storing a parent’s scooter while they move into care, it’s worth checking first whether the care home has room for it. If it’s leased, for example through the Motability Scheme, contact the provider before you store it, as the scooter belongs to them.

For dealers and care providers

A unit can hold up to five scooters, powered wheelchairs, e-bikes or similar battery-powered vehicles. To store more than five, take every battery out and keep them elsewhere. Call us and we’ll help you plan the space.

When you know the scooter’s size, get a price online or call us on 0800 2545585 and ask for a ground-floor unit.
