Pots, pans, crockery and appliances are all welcome, but food is one of the few things we ask you to keep out of your unit, because it attracts mice and insects. Fresh, chilled, frozen and opened food can’t be stored, and if you’re hoping to bring unopened tins, sealed jars or pet food, please call us first on 0800 2545585 so we can talk it through.
Why we’re careful about food
Our units sit side by side, so a mouse that finds food in one unit doesn’t stop there. It can go on to chew through the sofas, clothes and boxes in the units around it. Keeping food out is how every customer protects everyone else’s belongings, including yours. Our sites also have professional pest control in place, with regular inspections, so the building is looked after too.
Clearing a kitchen before a move
Whether you’re moving house or clearing a parent’s home, there’s usually a cupboard of food with nowhere obvious to go. A few things that work well:
- use up what you can in the last week or two before the move;
- give unopened, in-date food to a local food bank;
- ask a friend or neighbour to keep a box of long-life food for you until you’re settled;
- bin anything opened or out of date before moving day.
Everything else in the kitchen stores well once it’s clean, dry and free of crumbs: pans, plates, glasses, small appliances and the kitchen table. A fridge or freezer can come too, as long as it’s empty, defrosted and dry. Our guide to storing a fridge or freezer shows how to get it ready.
Storing for a food business or food bank
If you sell food at markets or online, or collect donations for a food bank, call us before you book and tell us what you’d like to keep. Your packaging, empty jars, labels, gazebo and stall kit are all welcome, and we’ll tell you straight away what works for the food itself.
If food has ended up in your unit
It happens, especially after a rushed move. Just take it home on your next visit. If you ever spot droppings or gnaw marks, tell us straight away and we’ll help.
Not sure about something in your boxes? Call us on 0800 2545585 or email hello@wigwamstorage.co.uk, and we’ll give you a quick answer. When you’re ready, you can get a price online.
