Struggling to find your belongings amidst the chaos of your home? It’s no secret that clutter can turn even the most organised among us into frustrated treasure hunters. The good news? You don’t need to break the bank to get your home in order. With a little creativity, a few household items and some clever thinking, you can revolutionise your space. Here are our favourite DIY storage hacks to tidy up your life.

1. Glass Jars for Small Items

Those old jam jars aren’t just for the recycling bin. Clean them up, remove the labels and suddenly you have storage for everything from buttons and screws to office supplies. Bonus points if you label them with a marker or chalk stickers.

Hang them underneath a shelf or line them up on your work bench for an industrial-chic vibe. Your craft supplies will never look this posh again, even Posh Spice will be jealous!

2. Pegboards Aren’t Just for Sheds

Pegboards are a fabulous way to organise just about anything. Mount one in your kitchen to hang pots and pans, use it in your entryway for keys and hats, or even turn it into a funky jewellery display. Who knew DIY could double as wall art?

3. Wine Racks for Towels

Wine racks — great for Merlot, even better for rolled up towels. Pop one in your bathroom or guest room and suddenly your towel storage goes from “shove-it-in-the-cupboard” to “spa-worthy elegance”. Cheers to a clutter-free home!

4. Shoe Organisers: Not Just for Shoes

Over-the-door shoe organisers are the unsung heroes of storage hacks. Use them in your pantry to stash snacks, sauces or spices. Hang one in your kid’s room to corral toys or keep your cleaning supplies handy and organised. If you’ve got a door, you’ve got storage potential.

5. Magnetic Strips for Metal Bits

Magnetic strips aren’t just for holding knives in the kitchen. Stick one to your bathroom wall for bobby pins, tweezers and nail clippers. Or put one in your garage for tools. It’s like having a magic wand for keeping tiny, easily lost items exactly where you need them.

6. Bookshelves Under the Stairs

Harry Potter lived under the stairs and your books can too! Turn that awkward space beneath your staircase into a functional bookshelf. Paint it to match your décor and watch it transform into a conversation starter. Extra points if you add a comfy reading nook alongside it — everyone loves a bit of hygge.

7. PVC Pipe Cubbies

Got leftover PVC pipes from a DIY project? Cut them into even sections, paint them, and voilà — instant storage cubbies. They’re perfect for storing scarves, gloves, or even shoes. It’s an affordable way to repurpose materials while keeping your space organised.

8. Labelled Baskets for the Win

There’s nothing revolutionary about baskets, but labelled baskets? That’s a game-changer. Use them in cupboards, wardrobes or open shelving to group similar items together. Labels not only look smart but also stop you from rummaging through piles when you’re in a hurry.

9. Pallet Boards for Vertical Storage

Pallet boards are having a moment in the DIY world — and for good reason. Mount one on your wall and attach hooks to store everything from gardening tools to kitchen utensils. Rustic charm? Check. Functional storage? Double-check.

10. Old Suitcases for Hidden Storage

Vintage suitcases are not only trendy but also ridiculously useful. Stack them for a retro look and use them to store off-season clothes, extra bedding or your collection of Christmas jumpers. It’s style and substance in one tidy package.

11. Spice Racks for Kids’ Books

Transform a simple spice rack into a mini bookshelf for your child’s room. Mount it low on the wall so they can reach their favourite bedtime stories. This hack keeps books organised and encourages your little one to pick their own tales — win-win!

I have used the storage at Cheltenham for nearly two years now and have always been glad I made the change from a large facility in Kingsditch. I recall leaving a glowing review of Casey and his team when I first took on the unit. Just yesterday I left a less than complimentary review but have discovered my frustration at the time was due to misleading info I obtained over the Internet and nothing to do with Wigwam. So that review is withdrawn and I continue to recommend Wigwam as a convenient town centre facility, well run and utilising a high tech, easy to use entry system.
