How should I store CDs, DVDs and video games?

Keep each disc in its case, stand the cases upright like books in sturdy, lidded boxes, and keep the boxes clean, dry and off the floor. Packed that way, a CD, DVD or game collection takes very little space and comes out just as it went in.

Packing the discs

  • Every disc in its case. Loose discs scratch easily. If you’ve lost some cases, slim replacement cases or paper sleeves cost very little.
  • Upright, not flat. Standing cases on their edge, spines up, stops the weight of a tall stack pressing on the bottom cases and makes titles easy to read when you’re looking for one.
  • Small, strong boxes. Discs are heavier than they look, so use smaller boxes or lidded plastic crates you can lift comfortably, and fill any gaps with paper so nothing slides about.
  • Label the side of each box with what’s inside, such as “Films A to M” or “PlayStation games”, so you can find one without unpacking the lot.

Consoles, controllers and cables

Pack consoles in their original boxes if you still have them, or wrap them in bubble wrap or a towel inside a snug box. Bag the cables and controllers with each console so nothing goes astray. For laptops, televisions and other equipment, our guide to storing electronics covers packing, padding and warming up afterwards.

Controllers, handhelds and other gadgets with built-in batteries are welcome within our battery limits: up to ten items with built-in batteries in a unit, free of visible damage and not stacked. Power banks and portable chargers need to stay at home. Our units don’t have power sockets, so nothing is ever left charging.

Keeping them in good condition

Discs and their cases do best somewhere dry and away from heat and direct sunlight. Our units are clean, dry and secure, with our indoor units purpose-built inside our buildings, so a few simple habits are all you need:

  • pack everything clean and completely dry;
  • stand the boxes on a pallet or a layer of sturdy boxes, off the floor;
  • leave a small gap at the walls so air can move.

If you have a valuable or rare collection, include it in the value you declare for contents cover, at what it would cost to replace.

How much space?

A box of CDs or games takes about the same space as a box of books, so a large collection usually fits in a corner of a unit you’re using for other things. A small unit or a locker can hold a collection on its own. Call us on 0800 2545585 and we’ll help you choose, or get a price online.
