Give us a quick call on 0800 2545585 before you bring a trailer, and we’ll tell you straight away whether we can help at the site you have in mind. Wherever your trailer ends up, it will keep best stored clean, dry, unloaded and secure, so here’s how to lay one up well.
Why we ask you to call first
Trailers come in all shapes and sizes, from a small box trailer to a horse box, and getting one in and out safely depends on the trailer and on the site. A short call means you won’t make a wasted trip.
How to lay up a trailer
The trailer maker Temared gives simple advice for a trailer you won’t use for a while:
- Unload it, and keep it unloaded while it’s stored.
- Wash and dry it carefully, including the rims and tyres.
- Grease all its components if it’s going to stand for a long time.
- Keep it indoors or under cover, out of the weather that rusts steel and ages tyres.
- Move it every two to three weeks, so the tyres don’t rest on the same spot and lose their shape.
- Check the tyre pressures regularly and top them up when needed.
Your trailer’s handbook, or the dealer who services it, can tell you anything specific to your model.
Keeping it secure
Dorset Police advise owners to keep a record of the trailer’s serial numbers and photographs of it, which help if it’s ever stolen. They also suggest securing it with a wheel clamp and a hitch lock, and not relying on the standard hitch lock fitted by the manufacturer alone, as thieves can get past these.
Short of space at home?
If the trailer lives on the drive because the garage is full, moving the garage overflow into a unit can free up room. Every unit has its own alarm, and our sites are watched by CCTV, monitored around the clock by a professional monitoring company. Our guide to choosing a unit size helps you find the right space.
