What are the different types of self storage?

Self storage comes in a few physical forms: indoor units inside a building, smaller lockers, and drive-up units or outdoor containers you can park right beside. On top of that, the same space can be set up around what you’re storing it for, whether that’s a house move, a business, a student summer or a box of files.

Indoor units

Our indoor units are purpose-built rooms inside our buildings. Access control protects the external doors, every unit has its own alarm, and our sites are watched by CCTV, monitored around the clock by a professional monitoring company. Free trolleys at every site make it easy to wheel your things from the car park to your door. Indoor units suit almost anything, from a few boxes to the contents of a family home.

Lockers

A locker is simply a smaller storage space, for a few boxes, suitcases or files rather than a room’s worth of furniture. Ask us whether your nearest site has lockers, and our guide to storage units and lockers helps you decide between the two.

Drive-up units and outdoor containers

At Chipping Norton, Shipston-on-Stour and Warminster we also have a limited number of drive-up units and outdoor shipping containers. You park beside your space and load straight in, which helps with heavy furniture, tools or regular trips in a van. Our guide to driving up to a container explains how loading works.

We offer standard self storage rather than climate-controlled units. If you have something sensitive to temperature, give us a call and we’ll talk through the best way to store it.

Storage shaped around what you need

The space is the same; what changes is how you use it:

Other kinds of storage you may come across

Removal firms often offer containerised storage, where your belongings are packed into wooden containers and stacked in the firm’s own warehouse. It suits people who won’t need anything until moving day, while self storage gives you your own space to visit whenever you like, normally between 6am and 10pm, seven days a week. Our guide to self storage and removals storage compares the two.
