Compare the same size of unit and the total cost over the time you expect to store, then look at what protects your belongings: security, contents cover, a clear contract and access hours that suit you. Run both companies through the same short checklist and the right choice usually becomes clear.
1. Compare the price like for like
- The same size. Match square feet with square feet. The Self Storage Association UK (SSA UK) notes that some providers quote cubic feet, which depends on ceiling height.
- How often you’re billed. Some companies bill monthly and some every four weeks, which means 13 payments a year rather than 12. Compare the cost over your whole stay, not a single payment.
- After the offer. An introductory price is lovely, but check the standard price that follows it if you might stay longer.
- The extras. Add the cost of contents cover, any deposit and any other fees, and check the notice you’d need to give to leave.
2. Check what keeps your things safe
The SSA UK’s checklist for choosing a provider says that, as a minimum, there should be CCTV on all entry and exit points and controlled access to the building, and that only you should have access to your unit unless you’ve given someone else the right. Ask each company how its site is protected and who can get into your unit.
3. Read the contract and the cover
Self storage is self-regulated, so the SSA UK advises making sure you have a proper contract, including what happens if a payment is missed. Ask what contents cover is offered and whether you can use your own policy instead.
4. Make sure it fits your life
Check the access hours, how far you’ll travel, parking and loading, and whether trolleys are provided. The SSA UK also suggests checking that a provider is a current SSA UK member, and its online directory lets you look up a site.
How Wigwam measures up
If we’re one of the two on your list:
- new customers pay no deposit, and you’re billed every four weeks, with an invoice emailed 5 to 7 days before each payment;
- a professional monitoring company watches our CCTV around the clock, external doors have access control, and every unit has its own alarm and lock;
- only you, and the people you choose, can get into your unit;
- you can take our contents protection or use your own policy, and if you send proof of your own cover within 14 days of moving in, we refund our charge in full;
- access is normally from 6am to 10pm, seven days a week, with free trolleys and free parking while you unload;
- we’re a member of the SSA UK.
