Prohibited items

Prohibited items are the goods a storage agreement says must not be kept in a unit, usually because they could start a fire, leak, give off fumes, attract pests or break the law, or because losing them could never be put right. Each storage provider sets its own list in its terms.

At Wigwam

Furniture, boxes, household goods, business stock and tools are all welcome. Our list is short, and it’s the same for every customer, so the unit next to yours is held to the same standard as your own. These can’t be stored:

  • food or anything perishable (for unopened tins or sealed jars, call us first);
  • plants or animals, living or dead;
  • anything flammable or combustible, such as petrol, oil, paint, solvents, gas bottles and aerosols;
  • firearms, explosives, weapons or ammunition;
  • chemicals, radioactive materials, biological agents, toxic waste or asbestos;
  • anything that gives off fumes or smells;
  • anything illegal or illegally obtained, and unsafe or unlicensed goods such as fireworks;
  • anything that could harm the environment or other people’s property;
  • cash, deeds and securities, such as share certificates;
  • anything irreplaceable, or whose value to you is sentimental rather than something money could put back.

Batteries are welcome within a few sensible limits: see lithium-ion batteries. A motorbike can be stored once its fuel and oil are drained and its battery removed.

Why the list exists

Most of it is about fire, fumes and pests, the things that could spread from one unit to the next, so the list protects your belongings as much as anyone’s. The last two items are things that are hard or impossible to replace, so originals such as deeds, a will or family keepsakes are safest at home, in a fireproof box, or with your solicitor or bank.

If something isn’t on the list and you’re unsure, ask us before moving day on 0800 2545585. The full rules are in our terms and conditions.
