Can I store alcohol in a storage unit?

Yes, sealed wine, beer and cider can go in your unit, in bottles, cans or cases. For spirits and fortified drinks such as whisky, gin, port or liqueurs, give us a quick call on 0800 2545585 before you pack them and we’ll confirm.

What to keep at home

Opened or part-drunk bottles and opened boxes of wine stay at home, because anything open can leak or give off a smell that attracts pests. The same goes for home brew that’s still fermenting. Counterfeit or smuggled drink can’t be stored, and nor can gas cylinders for kegs, bar taps or soda siphons, since compressed gas can’t be stored.

Your clean, dry brewing kit, empty kegs, wine racks, glassware and bar equipment are all welcome.

Wine collections

The everyday bottles that travel with a house move are fine. Our units are standard self storage rather than climate-controlled, so they aren’t designed for ageing fine wine over the long term. If you’re building a collection to lay down, a specialist wine store is the better home for it, and your wine merchant can tell you how a few months in storage would suit a particular bottle. If you’re unsure, call us and we’ll talk it through.

Everything you store needs to be covered, so include your wine at what it would cost to replace. Our contents protection covers risks such as fire, burst pipes and break-ins, but not damage caused by heat or cold, which is another reason to keep valuable wine somewhere temperature-controlled.

Clearing a relative’s home

If you’re clearing a parent’s house, it’s worth going through the sideboard and drinks cabinet before the furniture comes to us. Sealed wine and beer can go in with everything else; opened bottles go home or get shared out, and call us about any spirits.

For drinks businesses

Small brands, market traders and online sellers can keep sealed, duty-paid stock in a business storage unit, with access seven days a week, normally 6am to 10pm. Stock held without the duty paid needs an HMRC-approved excise warehouse, so it can’t come to a unit. The unit is for storage only, so sales and customer collections happen elsewhere.
