Yes. You can store up to five e-bikes, e-scooters, e-skateboards or similar in a unit, or more if their batteries are taken out and kept elsewhere. The one thing to check is the battery: if it comes out and is rated over 160Wh, keep it at home and store the bike without it.
The rules at a glance
| Item | Can it be stored? |
|---|---|
| E-bikes, e-scooters, e-skateboards and similar | Yes, up to five per unit, or more with their batteries removed and kept elsewhere |
| Loose lithium-ion batteries of 160Wh or less | Yes |
| Lithium-ion batteries over 160Wh | Only if built in and not removable. A removable one stays with you, even if it clips into the bike |
| Power banks, portable chargers and similar | No |
| Laptops, tablets, children’s toys and similar with built-in batteries | Yes, up to ten per unit |
The watt-hour (Wh) rating is usually printed on the battery or given in the manual. If you’re not sure about yours, call us before you bring it and we’ll help you check.
Why the rules exist
Lithium-ion batteries are safe in normal use, but a damaged or faulty one can overheat and catch fire. A storage building holds many people’s belongings, so we keep the number of batteries in any one unit small, keep larger loose batteries and chargers out, and hold every customer to the same limits. That protects your bike as much as anyone else’s things.
Our units don’t have power sockets, so nothing is ever left charging. Keeping a removable battery at home has a bonus too: you can look after it and charge it there, ready for when you collect the bike.
Getting it ready
- Check it’s undamaged. Anything with a built-in battery should be free of visible damage or faults. Don’t store a battery that’s swollen, cracked, leaking or has been in an accident.
- Give it space. Don’t stack battery-powered items, and leave room for air around them.
- Store it at a low charge. We recommend the lowest practical charge, or the storage level your battery’s maker gives in the manual.
- Clean and dry it before it goes in, and stand it upright on its stand or against a wall, away from boxes of paper or fabric.
Insurance
Everything you store needs to be insured, through our contents protection or your own policy. E-bikes can be valuable, so make sure your cover includes yours at the right value.
