If you live around Dorking, Leith Hill, Holmwood, Capel, Ockley, Abinger or Westcott, Guildford is usually the first place you think of for storage. It’s the big nearby town, so it feels like the obvious answer. But the drive, the traffic, and the scramble for a space once you get there can turn something that should be simple into another item on an already long list.

Need space fast and Guildford’s quoting long waits or small units left? Jump to what’s happening in Guildford.
Want to know exactly what Dorking offers before you call? Jump to the facts.
Wondering if you can just pull up and load? Jump to the honest answer on access.

Why Surrey Hills locals end up looking at Guildford storage first

It’s a pattern more than a plan. Guildford is the biggest town nearby, so a search for “self storage” naturally lands there, even for people who live closer to Dorking. But “biggest” and “easiest” aren’t the same thing. Guildford’s storage sites cluster on its industrial estates, so a genuine local alternative in the Surrey Hills is worth a proper look before you commit to the bigger town by default. If you are in Westcott, Brockham or along the A25, our guide to the A25 villages and Dorking shows how the site fits your road.

Guildford’s storage squeeze, in plain numbers

If you’ve been looking for storage in Guildford and found the size you need hard to get, or a longer drive than you’d like, Dorking is worth a look.

What’s happening at Guildford’s storage sites right now?

Is it just one operator, or the whole town?

We can’t speak for every Guildford storage site. What we can say is that this is a live, dated data point at a major operator, and it’s worth checking before you assume Guildford will simply have what you need, when you need it.

What Wigwam Self Storage Dorking actually offers

Here’s what you’re getting at Wigwam Self Storage Dorking: a site at Unit 3, Curtis Road, Dorking, RH4 1AA, storage access from 6:00am to 10:00pm every day, and a range of unit sizes; ask us if you need something larger.

Address, hours and unit sizes

You can get to your unit any day of the week between 6am and 10pm. Our office team is available Monday to Friday, 8:30am to 5:30pm, for sizing, availability, access and booking questions, closed at weekends.

Security and entry

Every unit is individually alarmed, the site has 24/7 externally monitored CCTV, motion-sensitive lighting, and smart entry, so you’re not relying on a physical key that can be lost or copied.

Terms, plainly

There are two separate things to know here, not one. First, no deposit is required when you book. Second, a minimum stay and a notice period apply when you want to leave. Ask the team for the exact current figure when you enquire, since terms like this do get updated. Third, any unused days within that notice period are refunded. Better you know all three up front than assume it’s simpler, or stricter, than it is.

If any of that sounds like what you need, the next sensible step is to check current availability at Dorking, rather than guessing from a search result.

What Dorking doesn’t do, so you’re not guessing

Three things aren’t on offer here, and it’s better you know now than find out later.

Does Wigwam Dorking offer container storage?

No. Dorking isn’t one of our container storage sites. If you specifically need container storage, that’s available at our Shipston-on-Stour, Chipping Norton and Warminster locations, not Dorking.

What about vehicles or climate control?

Dorking doesn’t offer vehicle, motorcycle or caravan storage (car and motorbike storage is a separate service at Chipping Norton, explained on our vehicle storage page), and it isn’t climate-controlled. What you get is clean, dry and secure storage for household and business items, which is what most people searching for storage near Dorking actually need.

Drive-up access: the straight answer

Wigwam offers drive-up storage as one of our service types, but exactly how that works can vary from site to site and unit to unit. Rather than guess or oversell what’s available at Dorking specifically, the sensible thing is to ask when you call.

Can I drive up to my unit at Wigwam Dorking?

We’d rather be straight with you than promise something we can’t confirm here: access arrangements can differ by unit size and location, so the answer for Dorking specifically is to check with the team directly.

What should I ask when I call?

Tell them the size of unit you’re considering and ask what the loading and access setup looks like for that unit. It takes thirty seconds, and means you know what you’re getting before you book.

Space to breathe, without the drive across town

Set the two options side by side and the difference isn’t who’s cheaper, it’s who’s got room. Guildford’s sites cluster on an industrial estate, with the traffic and the chance of a favourite size already gone (as covered above). Dorking, out in the Surrey Hills, is a calmer alternative that still gets the job done.

Is Dorking really more convenient than Guildford?

For most people living around Dorking, yes, simply because it removes the drive and the industrial-estate scramble. If you run a trade or small business locally, that matters more still: fewer vans competing for the same bay means loading and unloading stock without the wasted time.

Who this suits, and a nearby option if you’re not in Dorking

If you’re mid-move or renovating, you want a van’s worth of things in or out without a fight over a loading spot.

If you’re clearing or downsizing a house, there’s no need to rush. Storage access runs from 6am to 10pm every day, so you can go at your own pace rather than a tight appointment slot.

If you run a trade or small business locally, regular loading and unloading without industrial-estate traffic is the practical win.

If you’re further out towards Leatherhead, Wigwam Self Storage Leatherhead is the nearest sibling site and worth a look.

Check availability at Dorking

Guildford’s storage squeeze is real, at least on the evidence we can see right now, and Dorking gives you room to breathe instead. If drive-up access to your specific unit matters, ask when you call, it’s a quick question with a straight answer. When you’re ready, check availability at Wigwam Self Storage Dorking.

Frequently Asked Questions

Access arrangements can vary by unit size and location, so we’d rather you asked directly when you call than assume either way. Tell the team the unit size you’re considering and they’ll confirm exactly what the access and loading setup looks like.

Highly recommend this company! I recently moved and needed to store some items and was unsure where to store as I wanted to make sure it was close by but also very secure. I contacted this company and to spoke to Holly who was so welcoming and helped me decide what size would be better for me by allowing me access to see the units. The level of security in the premises is fantastic with cameras at every corner! I decided in the end to go with a 50ft storage and then dealt with both Helen and Jeremy who explain each step what happens moving forward and made sure that I would get access on the date that suited me. The process I thought was going to be long and added stress for me, however all 3 took that stress away! Thank you again!
